Emergency Kiss - Love is slow poison

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” — Oscar Wilde.

By the time they made Love Is Slow Poison, Emergency Kiss had already survived years of misfortune, including a fire that destroyed their first synthesisers — the only ones they had. The album was recorded in a friend’s garage and released through a label whose infrastructure and reputation were as non-existent as the band themselves.

Jeet Thayil - Speak, Amnesia

Recorded in weekly late-night sessions between December 2021 and December 2022, Jeet Thayil (guitar, vocals) created the soundscapes of Speak, Amnesia in controlled bursts of improvisation and release.

The sounds seem to emerge as a response to the isolation and anxiety of the years that immediately preceded its creation.

They sound like ‘future ghost music’ or soundtracks to imaginary films. The truth lies of course with the recipient. Ghosts sometime indicate where the future lies. We are supposed to scare. I was not scared. If it was late-night labour that created them, then it was beholden that I listen at the same witching hour. What I heard left me disturbed and stirred in equal measure. There is a reason a record is called a record. It is the documentation of a moment, a snapshot that fades into time’s brutal regime at the very moment of its creation. By the time you click on play, it’s over, all that’s left is the hieroglyph of a gone emotion. But like a photograph, a letter, or a scar, a piece of music is always there to take you back, even as the moment and the memory of that moment melts away. Thus, speaks amnesia.

what could it mean to orient oneself towards transitionary listenings? what could it mean to listen to our relationships and negotiations with gender? what could it mean to listen outside normativity?

Listening Session — ISSAI: Emergency Kiss & New Ecologies

August 21, The Indian Sonic Research Organisation hosted an evening at OTJF Record Store, featuring an ISSAI label showcase of Emergency Kiss and New Ecologies.

Emergency Kiss began in the late 90s with three friends experimenting with instruments they barely knew how to play, writing Hindi lyrics drawn from Bollywood and television culture. The result is music that is raw, loud, unpolished, and deeply affectionate.

New Ecologies is a collaboration between artists in India and Germany, transforming animal field recordings from the Max Planck Institute into layered sound works. Birds, bats, frogs, and other species become the basis for immersive sonic environments that reframe ecological listening as musical form.
